[조동사]

1. 조동사

① 조동사 + have p.p의 쓰임

must have p.p	: ~했었음에 틀림없다
should have p.p	: ~했어야만 했다
ought to have p.p
cannot have p.p	: ~했을 리가 없다
could have p.p	: ~했을 수도 있다
may have p.p	: ~했을지도 모른다
might have p.p
need not have p.p	: ~할 필요는 없었다

 

② would와 used to의 쓰임

would	: ~하곤 했다(불규칙적으로 반복된 동작)
used to	: ~하곤 했다(규칙적으로 반복된 동작/상태)
부정 : didn’t use to < used not to ~
의문 : Did + 주어 + use to R~

ex) People didn’t use to have any electricity things. = People used not to have any electricity things.

ex) Did she use to play tennis every morning before breakfast?

 

③ cannot V too~ : 아무리 ~해도 지나치지 않다.

- 같은 표현

· cannot V ~enough ex) We cannot praise her effect enough.

· cannot over V ex) We cannot over praise her effect.

· It is impossible ~for + S’ to V too~ ex) It is impossible for us to praise her effect too much.

· It is impossible ~for + S’ to V ~enough ex) It is impossible for us to praise her effect enough.

· It is impossible ~for + S’ to over V ex) It is impossible for us to over praise her effect

 

④ cannot but V : ~하지 않을 수 없다.

- 같은 표현

cannot help but V	have no alternative but to V
have no choice but to V	cannot refrain from -ing
cannot help -ing

 

⑤ cannot ~without : ~하지 않고 ~할 수 없다 (항상 하게 된다)

ex) I cannot see her without thinking of my mother.

 

⑥ must, have to, had to

- must V(~해야 한다) = have to V

- must not V(~하면 안 된다) ≠ don’t have to V(~할 필요 없다, need not V)

- must V(~임에 틀림없다) <-> cannot V(~일 리가 없다)

 

7. 조동사

⑦ would (과거의 불규칙적인 상태)

- Would you mind -ing? = Do you mind -ing? (~하는 것을 꺼리십니까?)

- Would rather A than B : B보다 A가 더 낫다

 

⑧ used to V / be used to V / be used to -ing

used to R	: ~하곤 했다
be used to R	: ~하는데 사용되다
be used to ing	: ~에 익숙하다

ex) She was used to riding a bicycle to go to and from work.

ex) The weapon was used to attack the rest of the enemy.

 

 

2. 조동사 should의 특수용법

① shall

- shall은 주어의 의지가 아니라 주위의 사정으로 인하여 ‘-하지 않을 수 없다’는 의미가 내포된 미래 시제 조동사.

· 법률, 규칙 ex) The fine shall not exceed 50 dollars.

· 예언 ex) Seek, and you shall find.

 

② ought to

- 의무, 당연 (부정형은 ought not to)

- 과거의 유감 : ought to have p.p = should have p.p

 

 

3. 기타

- lest ~ should : ~하지 않도록.

· 같은 표현 : for fear ~ should / so that ~ may not

 

- It’s time that + S+ should V

 

 

3. 준조동사

- 실제 조동사가 아님에도, 조동사처럼 사용되는 동사.

- need(필요가 있다) / dare(감히 ~하다) => 부정문과 의문문에서 조동사처럼 사용되기도 함.

need	일반동사	need to V	don’t need to V	Do + S + need to + V~?
	조동사		need not V	Need S V~?
dare	일반동사	dare to V	don’t dare to V	Do + S + dare to + V~?
	조동사		dare not V	Dare + S + V~?
