[전치사]

(1) 전치사의 특징

- 전치사는 명사 앞에 쓰여 시간, 장소, 이유, 목적 등을 나타낸다.

- 전치사는 명사를 연결하는 역할을 하며, 전명구는 형용사나 부사 역할을 한다.

- 전치사 뒤에는 문장이 올 수 없으며, 명사 형태(명사/동사/명사절)가 온다.

- 전치사 앞에는 명사뿐만 아니라 형용사나 동사도 올 수 있다.

 

 

 

(2) 전치사의 종류

1. 시간 전치사

① 시간을 나타내는 전치사

- at + 시각 / 정확한 시점 ex) at 1 p.m. / at 3 O’clock / at noon / at beginning / at end / at present

- on + 날짜 / 요일 / 주중 / 주말 ex) on November 26 / on Monday / on Weekdays / on weekends

- in + 월 / 연도 / 계절 / 세기 ex) in April / in 2013 / in the winter / in the 21st century

 

② 시점을 나타내는 전치사 : when으로 물었을 때 정답이 되는 표현

- since + 과거시점

- by + 시점 (완료적인 의미) = no later than + 시점 ex) by next Thursday

- until + 시점 (계속적인 의미) ex) until tomorrow

- before + 시점 ex) before February

- from + 시점 = starting + 시점 ex) from next month

 

③ 기간을 나타내는 전치사 : how long으로 물었을 때 정답이 되는 표현

- within + 기간 ex) within 30 days

- for + 숫자로 나타낸 기간 표현 ex) Ms. Yoon has been living in Seoul for the last six years.

- during + 기간을 나타내는 명사 ex) Applications will be accepted only during business hours.

- over + 기간

- in + 기간

- throughout + 기간

2. 장소 전치사

① 장소를 나타내는 전치사

- in + 공간 (마을/도시/국가/대륙 등)

- at + 지점 (공항/정류장 등)

- on + 표면 (층/선반/웹사이트 등)

 

② 그 밖에 위치나 방향을 나타내는 다양한 전치사

- to : -로, -에게 ex) to areas 지역으로

- within + 장소/범위 : -이내에

- across : -을 건너, -곳곳에

- into : -의 속으로

4. 전치사

- along : -을 따라

- through : -을 거쳐, 내내, -을 통해

 

 

3. 기타 전치사

- at + 비율/속도/가격 ex) at a low cost

- on, upon : -하자마자 ex) On arrival / Upon receipt of the books

- above, below : -이상, -아래

- for : -을 위해서, -를 향하여 ex) meet for the meeting

- with : -와 함께, -을 가지고 있는, -인 채로 ex) a dinner with customers / an applicant with a wealth of expertise /

with my arms crossed (팔짱을 낀 채로)

- of : -의

- as : -로서

- following : -에 이어

- alongside : -옆에, 나란히

- unlike : -와는 다르게

- pending : -가 있을 때까지

- including : -을 포함하여

- onto : (이동의 동사와 함께) -위로, -위에

- 증감동사 + to : -로 ex) The unemployment rate fell to 3 percent.

- 그리거나 쓰는 방법의 in ex) The document should be signed in black ink.

(3) 관용적으로 쓰이는 전치사 표현

① at

at table	식사 중	at sea	항해중
at the rate of	-의 비율로	be at home in	-에 정통하다
at the cost of	-의 대가를 치르고	people at large	일반대중
at random	함부로, 닥치는대로	the world at large	전세계
at ease	편안한	at all times	늘, 언제나
at odds	의견이 일치하지 않는

 

② in

in demand	수요가 있는	in place	제자리에
in a day	하루에	in this regard	이 점에 대해서는
in time	때맞추어	in one’s right mind	제정신인
in cash	현금으로

 

③ out of

out of control	통제할 수 없는	out of place	제자리에 있지 않은, 부적절한
out of stock	재고가 떨어진	out of order	고장난
out of shape	아픈, 제 모양이 아닌	out of the blue	갑자기, 예고없이
out of sorts	불쾌한, 몸이 불편한	out of reach	힘이 미치지 않는
out of bounds	한도를 벗어난	out of hand	즉시, 손을 쓸 수 없는
out of print	절판된	out of season	제철이 아닌
out of the question	불가능한	out of spirits	기가 죽어, 맥없이

 

4. 전치사

④ 비슷한 의미의 전치사

-때문에	due to / because of / owe to / owing to / thanks to / on account of / by reason of / in view of / on the ground of
-에 관해	about / as to / as for / regarding / concerning / in(with) regard to / on / relating to / with(in) reference to
-외에도	besides / in addition to / plus / as well as / aside from / apart from / on top of
-을 제외하고	except (for) / aside from / apart from / barring / excluding
-와 함께	along with / together with / in conjunction with
-을 고려할 때	considering / given
-에도 불구하고	in spite of / in the face of / with all / for all / after all
-에 의해서	by means of / by dint of / by virtue of
-할 목적으로	for the purpose of / with the object of / with a view to / with a view of
-을 위해서	for the sake of / for the good of / for the benefit of / by way of
-할 경우에	in case of / in the event of
-에 따라서	in accordance with / according to / in proportion to

 

⑤ 두 단어 이상으로 된 전치사

depending on	-에 따라	in advance of	-보다 앞선, -보다 발전한
in response to	-에 응답하여	in favor of	-을 찬성하여
in honor of	-을 기념하여, 축하하여	in observance of	-을 준수하여
as of + 날짜	-부로, -부터	on the basis of	-을 기반으로
in terms of	-면에서는	up to	-까지, -에게 달려있는
in comparison with	-와 비교하여

 

⑥ 그 외 전치사 숙어 표현

at one’s convenience	-가 편할 때	at the latest	아무리 늦어도
toward the end of	-말 쯤에	at the conclusion of	-가 끝날 때
come to an end	끝나다	at the time of	-경우에
come into effect	효력이 발생하다	come close to	거의 –할 뻔하다
for use	사용을 위한	demand for	-에 대한 수요

(4) 특정 동사와 함께 쓰이는 전치사

① 주어 + 타동사 + 人 with B

- provide / supply / face(직면하다) + 人 with B (= B for 人)

- furnish / endow / credit(인정하다) / equip / fill / present / entrust(맡기다) / replenish + 人 with B

(= B to 人)

- compare / share / charge / cover / connect / contrast / confuse / replace / correlate(연관성이 있다)

4. 전치사

② 주어 + 타동사 + 人 of B

- rob(도둑질하다) / deprive / rid(제거하다) / cure / ease(진정시키다) / relieve / clear / empty / strip(제거하다)

- remind / convince / inform / assure / warn / accuse / notify / tell / advise

 

③ 주어 + 타동사 + 人 from –ing

- keep / prevent / hinder / prohibit / deter / stop / disable / dissuade / discourage

 

④ 주어 + 타동사 + 人 for B

- blame / criticize / punish / scold(-을 꾸짖다) / reprimand(-을 꾸짖다) / upbraid / thank / praise /

reward / bless

 

⑤ 자동사 + 전치사

aim at / be aimed at / apologize for(-에 대해 사과하다) / apologize to(-에게 사과하다) / arrive in(at)

arrive from / benefit from / compete with(against) / depart from / fill in(out) / graduate from

insist on / leave for / object to / point to(-을 지적하다) / belong to / care for / complain about

contribute to / decide on / fall to(-로 떨어지다) / fall by(-만큼 떨어지다) / hope for(-을 바라다) / proceed with

success to(-을 계승하다) / succeed in(-에 성공하다) / converse with / speak to(with) (-와 대화하다)

⑥ 타동사 + 목적어 + 전치사

⑦ ‘걱정하다, 근심하다’류의 동사 + about

- be concerned about / be worried about / be anxious about

 

⑧ ‘구별하다’류의 동사 + from

- distinguish from / differentiate from / tell from / know from / discriminate from

 

⑨ ‘갈망하다, 유명하다’류의 동사 + for

- be famous for / be noted for / be known for / be notorious for / be infamous for

 

⑩ ‘결과의 변화’류의 동사 + into

- convert into / translate into / change into / develop into

 

⑪ 재료 및 구성 요소의 전치사 of

- be made of / be built of(-로 지어지다) / consist of / be made up of (= be composed of) / be full of

- cf) 재료의 전치사 with : be filled with / be covered with
